On Saturday, May 28, 2005, Lafayette River Boatbuilding, a collaborative of boat builders, artisans, and craftsmen who work in wood and are led by Joe Filipowski, launched two boats in a public celebration on the Lafayette River, where Colonial Avenue meets the River.

JOE is an 11'6" miniature, working tug with the traditional salty look of an ocean-going tug boat. She has a beautifully rounded fantail stern and is topped off with a jaunty rooftop visor. She was designed by Berkeley A. Eastman of Berkeley Engineering in California. She has been built by Terry and Frank Robinson with the technical assistance of Lafayette River Boatbuilding and a host of friends. With a shoal draft of twenty-four inches she will be able to perform many functions including environmental recovery work in the headwaters of the Bay's tidal rivers.
