Annual Events and Ongoing Projects

Colonial Place/Riverview shows off in several annual events. Stroll the neighborhood and meet neighborhood artists at the annual Historic Riverview and Colonial Place Front Porch Art Walk. In December prizes are awarded in several categories to winners of the Holiday Decoration Contest.

Meet your neighbors at the July Hot Dog and Ice Cream Social--a family friendly event that usually includes local music talent and free bicycle registrations. The December Holiday Social features homemade holiday treats shared by everyone in attendance.

Take a walk through the Knitting Mill Creek Community Garden located behind Fellini's on Colley. Volunteer gardeners and admirers are welcome by project manager Becky Kiser. Or, let your dog run free in the CPRV Dog Park. Don't miss the dog portraits on the fence--one of the many projects undertaken by Buffy Masten to make this the best dog park in Norfolk.

John Stewart, a resident of Colonial Place, received an award in June 2007 in recognition of his leadership in forming the Lafayette Wetlands Partnership whose mission is to sustain and maintain the Knitting Mill Creek wetland at 46th and Colley.

Watch out for the Dominion Derby Girls as they practice flat track roller derby moves on Delaware Avenue in Colonial Place.

Promote the neighborhood. CPRV stickers (the famous white oval) are available by emailing Jeanne Ullian at ullian@verizon.net Stickers are $2.50 each.

Great Food! Great Company! at the CPRV Vegetarian Potlucks. Participate in these monthly, informal meals with your neighbors. You do not have to be vegetarian to attend. For information join the Veg Club listserv at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cprv_veggies.

Riverview was officially designated a National Historic District on September 24, 1999 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register. On June 13, 2001 Colonial Place received its official designation. Volunteers in both neighborhoods donated their time to document every structure with both a photograph and a written description. The written documentation for Colonial Place is available if you would like to check on your house or read an interesting history of the neighborhood and an overview of its historical significance.

Riverview Village sign

Our business corridors on Granby and Colley are flourishing. The Riverview Village Business District should see an increase in foot traffic with the new condos at the foot of the bridge and the promise of new apartments on the old yacht club property. Improvements in street lighting and sidewalks, as well as numerous flower pots, mark this area as a place to shop and dine. Alice McCoy is the civic league liaison to this district.

Attention is now turning to our other boundary--the North Colley Business District--where the North Colley Partnership (NCP) is focusing on strengthening relationships among the businesses and building a sense of community with the civic leagues of the bordering neighborhoods and ODU. David Block serves as the Civic Club liaison.
