Neighbors and Experts Team Up to Prune 200+ Crepe Myrtles in Colonial Place

article by krissy mohit

This month, Colonial Place neighbors rolled up their sleeves and joined forces with teams from the Norfolk Master Gardeners and City Forester Steven Traylor for an educational and hands-on pruning event. Together, they carefully trimmed and maintained over 200 Crepe Myrtle trees throughout the neighborhood — keeping CPRV’s tree-lined streets as beautiful and healthy as ever.

The event wasn’t just about hard work — it was about learning. Residents gained valuable insight into proper pruning techniques that meet city standards, empowering them to help care for the trees around their homes. As a helpful guideline, residents can perform minor trimming on any city tree branch no thicker than a thumb — a simple “rule of thumb” to remember! Participants also learned that “suckers” growing from the base of trees should be cut as close to the ground as possible to prevent rot and disease from taking hold.

A huge thank-you goes to Terry Reading, our CPRV Environmental & Community Improvement Chair, for providing much-needed coffee and donuts to keep our volunteers energized. And of course, heartfelt thanks to every neighbor who came out to lend a hand! Thank you to the Norfolk Master Gardeners, & the City of Norfolk City Forester Steven Traylor & his team of arborists

Keeping our neighborhood beautiful is a community effort — and it’s only possible when neighbors take the initiative and get involved. Volunteer today and help us keep Colonial Place and Riverview thriving!
