President’s Notes ‘n’ Stuff
Craig Reilly

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! It’s hard to believe that 2003 is already upon us. It was exciting to have had a visit last month by the Big Guy, Santa, and seeing the children interact with such an important Guest Speaker. The refreshments were great and we can all thank Andy Wallach for providing them. I truly hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas and will have a blessed and prosperous 2003.

This is the last opportunity that I will have to invite all of you to the Charette. A Charette in other words (for our purpose) is a workshop to provide input for the direction of and future for our neighborhoods. I can’t stress enough how important it is for everyone who can be there to be there. Plan to come and provide your insight about what you want to see happen in our neighborhoods and our city. The date is February 1, 2003, at the Stuart School from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Please plan to be there!

I have talked with Mr. Newcomb, Zoning Services Manager, and set up a tentative time for a committee to meet and discuss the 12.5-foot parcel of land at the end of 40th Street. The committee will look at the end of this street and the other dead-end streets in Riverview. With luck we will have more information and a presentation to deliver at our January meeting.

Finally, I have talked with a few people about the vacancy in the Treasurer’s position. Even though I have a couple of leads, nothing is finalized so please contact me if you are interested. Thanks to all of you for the energy and efforts you put in to make our Civic League one of the BEST in the city. I look forward to a New Year that will bring great things for our neighborhood and our city!

January’s Speaker
Andy Wallach

At our meeting on January 13, Vickie Pepper will give a short presentation on the Tanners Creek Garden Center. Vickie has served as the coordinator for the Tanners Creek Day Support Program for almost two years. The Day Support Program provides training and employment in horticulture for adults with disabilities. Vickie, in conjunction with the Day Support Staff of Chad Scharnberg and Margaret Gaudry currently supervises 13 adults working on community projects. The Garden Center, a subsidiary of Eggleston Services, opened in 1999 in cooperation with the Virginia Zoological Society. The Center, located on Zoo property at 249 La Vallette, has four greenhouses, a production house, and areas for field crops. More information is available at the web site: www.lwe.org/tannerscreek
